Holyrood Campus, Edinburgh:

Thorn LEDing the Way for Students

Background

New student accommodation at Holyrood Campus North, part of the University of Edinburgh was designed by JMArchitects/Oberlanders Architects, HarrisonStevens Landscape Architects and RSP Consulting Engineers, the new Postgraduate student accommodation was created to give a real community feel and contains 950 en-suite bedrooms, a large communal kitchen, 4 music rooms, reception, a main common room and a private dining suite. Landscape Architects HarrisonStevens and RSP Consulting Engineers worked on the design of the public realm and private spaces with a brief to provide an innovative, contextual response to complement the new student buildings.

Lighting solution

The Dyana fitting is IP66 rated and has a sleek rounded form and provides a glare- free white light, which makes it the perfect choice for the walkways around Holyrood Campus. The fitting offers a choice of mounting, lamps, control gear and controls, including dimmable for reduced energy consumption and maintenance. Alumet is a pencil slim tubular lighting column that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Available in 3 and 4 metre heights, the 4 metre columns were chosen for the campus installation. Available in four different options to suit different lighting control requirements, Alumet Control Direct was the preferred choice for Holyrood, chosen for its high performance and efficiency

Lighting objectives

A contemporary look was created throughout the urban areas, with a crisp public realm and street trees. Reflective areas for study and relaxation between lectures are defined by raised lawns and native herbaceous and grass planting that also lead the students through the various campus buildings. It was imperative that the walkways were well lit for visual comfort and safety as they are in constant use. RSP Consulting Engineers and HarrisonStevens chose a mixture of Thorn’s Dyana fittings, mostly wall mounted with internal servicing and cabling, plus Alumet Control Direct luminaires which blended well within the surrounding architecture.

Customer feedback

Martin Stevens, Director of HarrisonStevens commented “Our brief was to find energy efficient, high performance, low maintenance lighting which was also aesthetically pleasing and could blend into the surrounding design concept at Holyrood Campus. Thorn’s Lighting has fitted our brief perfectly and we are very pleased with the outcome of the project”.
